چکیده

The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of the clinical examination and magnetic resonance imaging versus intraoperative findings in meniscal tears. We evaluated 400 patients retrospectively in a 5-year period from 2001–2006 with knee pain and diagnosed with a meniscal tear. Accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and positive/negative predictive values were established, comparing the clinical results and the results of MRI with the intraoperative findings as the “gold standard”. The clinical examination produced less true-positive results compared to the MRI, false-positive results were less in MRI compared to the clinical examination. The rate of true-negative results was higher in MRI compared to the clinical diagnosis, false-negative results could be found frequently in clinical diagnosis compared to the MRI. Comparing the results of the MRI with arthroscopic findings it is obvious that the accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, and the positive and negative predictive values are higher than in the group of the clinical examination versus arthroscopic results. These results indicate that an MRI is necessary to complete an exact clinical diagnosis in meniscus tears, but surgery should only follow an MRI, when positive clinical symptoms have been exactly identified. Accuracy of MRI in Comparison with Arthroscopic Findings in the Diagnosis of Anterior Cruciate Ligament and Meniscus Tears

Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is of great aid in the diagnosis of knee lesions. Nevertheless, arthroscopy has remained the reference standard for the diagnosis of internal derangements of the knee, against which alternative diagnostic modalities should be compared. This study was designed to assess the value of MRI and clinical examination in the diagnosis of Anterior Cruciate Li...

Accuracy of SPECT bone scintigraphy in diagnosis of meniscal tears

Introduction: Scintigraphy has been considered as a useful tool in the assessment of meniscal tears. Our objective was to assess the accuracy of single photon emission tomography (SPECT), using MRI as the gold standard, in the diagnosis of meniscal tears. Materials and Methods: Between January 2003 and February 2005, 45 patients were studied with SPECT and MRI. Results: The respective sen...

بررسی ارزش تشخیصی معاینات بالینی در مقایسه با آرتروسکوپی در تشخیص ضایعات تحت حاد داخل مفصل زانو

Introduction & Objective: Rapidly progressing medical technology sometimes obscures the importance of physical examination. This study was designed to assess the value of clinical examination in the diagnosis of ligamentous and meniscal knee injuries in comparison with arthroscopic findings. Materials & Methods: Between 2006-2008 we conducted an observational study to assess intraarticular i...

Relationship between Clinical, MRI, and Arthroscopic Findings: A Guide to Correct Diagnosis of Meniscal Tears

Purpose  The aim of this prospective study was to compare and correlate clinical, MRI, and arthroscopic findings in cases of suspected meniscal tears. Using arthroscopic findings as the gold standard, the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of clinical investigation and MRI were evaluated to determine if is possible, after a careful exami...

MRI efficacy in diagnosing internal lesions of the knee: a retrospective analysis

BACKGROUND Many surgeons tend to believe that MRI is an accurate, non invasive diagnostic method, enough to lead to decisions for conservative treatment and save a patient from unnecessary arthroscopy. We conducted a retrospective study to investigate the accuracy of the MRI of the knee for the detection of injuries of the meniscus, cruciate ligaments and articular cartilage, in comparison with...
